schadenfreude (shädn-froid)
NOUN: Pleasure derived from the misfortune of others.

Look up the word “schadenfreude” in the dictionary and you will find a picture of me and my dad dancing a wee jig in the living room Monday night meDad after the Edmonton Oilers knocked the Detroit Red Wings outta the playoffs.

In my home town, you’re either a Leafs fan or a Wings fan.  You already know where I stand.  Dad stands in the same place, as does Mom.

Those Wings fans who decry the suggestion that their team’s stats might be a tad (*cough*) inflated because of the fact that they play in the weak Central division proves to me that denial ain’t just a river in Egypt. [rimshot] (I’m here all week, folks. Try the veal.) I mean, how can you deny that playing 24/82 games per season against pow(d)er(puf)ful divisional rivals St. Louis, Chicago, and Columbus (none of whom made it into the post-season) helped the Wings to the top of the standings?

So Monday night they were defeated in the first round of the playoffs by a team that ended up with 29 fewer points than they did in the regular season but who earned their points in a division with some considerably stronger teams than Detroit’s.

Nyah-nyah, Detroit fans. Welcome to reality.

  2. Must admit I’d never heard of the mook before, but I did a search at the Star and found an exquisite example of asshattery.
