Albert’s (Non-) Rolling Lunch
February 9, 2008
Update on something I mentioned back before Christmas…
I am happy to say that Albert’s Rolling Lunch is saved!
The one-time/long-time chip truck begins a new phase when it opens in the old Ice Cream Hut location in Point Edward–a few hundred yards from its original location, but still underneath the bridges and within an easy saunter of the riverfront. A saunter that will take you right by the other (lesser!) chip trucks which have usurped the mighty Albert’s prime location.

I haven’t seen anything in the newspaper about it yet, but I found out about this from a Point Edward businesswoman today. Subsequently drove by the Ice Cream Hut and, lo and behold, the sign in the window said “New location of Albert’s Rolling Lunch”. ‘Course the name won’t make any more sense than Records On Wheels did by the time I started working there (ROW started out as a mobile record store in a school bus), but mebbe they’ll incorporate the truck into the new bricks-and-mortar location.
It will be weird to have it in a building after 50-some years in a truck but, hey, as long as we can still get The Best Chips In The World, tha’s fiiiiiine.

Weee!!!!! That is awesome!!! And Damn those chips look good (drool). They ought to figure a way to back the truck into the side of the building. Or, they should have some mini trucks made up for sale.

So, now, when you guys come for a visit (and once I get my own place, I hope you will!), I will be able to take you all for fries under the bridge.

Glad to see them back…..wish they could have bid enough to be under the bridge where they belong???
Someone told me that the business has been sold a couple times now to different owners, and not the original family? Hope the “Fries” are still good?

The thing is, Donna, the public was never told why the bid from the Laviolettes (who bought the business from the original owners) did not win. As a matter of fact, the public was never even told what the criteria was. The whole thing is a mystery and, quite frankly, this non-disclosure by the Blue Water Bridge Authority about the bid criteria stinks, IMO. I think it’s a major PR gaffe by the BWBA.
Methinks they’re gonna need to put up a sign directing all the out-of-towners who go down under the bridge looking specifically for Albert’s Rolling Lunch to the new location, a few hundred meters away on Michigan. So’s they can still get their Albert’s fix.
As for the quality of the chips, themselves, it’s one of the few things you can depend on: Alberts’ chips are the best! They taste as delicious now as they did when I was a kidlet.

We come home to Sarnia from Atlanta every summer and it wouldn’t be home without Albert’s!! Glad you are back Laviolettes!

I moved here a few months ago and heard that Albert’s had these great fries, so today on my lunch I made my way to this place, ordered my fries to go with popcorn chicken (which was good), and ate at my desk at work. The chicken, as I say was good. The fries however, were plain oil. I actually, sitting at my desk an hour later, am nauseous. I have never felt so disgusting even after a few lousy fries! (I only had four or five thinking maybe I got the tail end of a bath or something on top). I don’t advise anyone to ever go there! Absolutely nauseating! On top of this, I had other people in the office try them to make sure it wasn’t just me. Four people spit out the bite in their mouths. DISGUSTING!

Sounds like you got a bad batch, Ellen. That’s too bad! You should go back and let them know–I’m sure they would be aghast and would do right by you. Personally, I’ve never had a bad plate of fries there and I’ve been going to the various incarnations of Albert’s for 40 years. Granted, I usually eat them right away rather than taking them back to work or home. If you do ever give them a second chance, try it on a nice day when you can just walk down under the bridges and eat them there.
Anyhow, thanks for your comment–dissenting views are always as welcome as those that agree.
